Service overview

What this service covers

NABSPRO provides local fingerprint collection and submission support for people who need a copy of their FBI Identity History Summary or proof that no summary was found. This is a federal fingerprint-based record summary. It is different from many state, employer, licensing, child-care, and private screening processes, so bring the written request before choosing the service.

Who this may be for

An FBI Identity History Summary may be requested for personal record review, overseas work, immigration or visa matters, adoption, housing, court-related needs, and other authorized purposes. For some U.S. employment, licensing, or adoption requests, the correct process may instead run through a state repository or the requesting agency.

What the office visit looks like

Fingerprint collection before the channeler submission

NABSPRO collects the fingerprints and information needed for the supported FBI Identity History Summary pathway. The approved channeler and the FBI control the electronic processing and response.

  • Bring current government-issued photo identification.
  • Bring the exact form, ORI, authorization number, or written request.
  • Do not send fingerprint images or identity records through the public website form.

Named channeler pathway

Accurate Biometrics is the FBI-approved channeler for this pathway

For the pathway described here, NABSPRO provides local fingerprint collection and submission support. Accurate Biometrics performs the approved-channeler role. NABSPRO does not present itself as the FBI-approved channeler.

An FBI-approved channeler forwards eligible fingerprint submissions and request data to the FBI and returns the response to the individual. The channeler cannot change FBI records, decide eligibility, or guarantee an FBI processing date.

The logo identifies the channeler used for this pathway. It does not imply that the FBI endorses NABSPRO.

Common questions

FBI Identity History Summary FAQs

What is an FBI Identity History Summary?

It is a copy of information associated with fingerprints submitted to the FBI, or a response stating that no Identity History Summary was found.

Is this the same as a Maryland background check?

No. An FBI Identity History Summary is federal. A Maryland or other state background check follows a different process and may contain different records.

What is an FBI-approved channeler?

An FBI-approved channeler receives the fingerprint submission and request data, electronically forwards the request to the FBI, receives the response, and returns it to the individual. The channeler does not control or change the FBI record.

Is NABSPRO the FBI-approved channeler?

NABSPRO provides local fingerprint collection and submission support. For the Accurate Biometrics pathway described on this page, Accurate Biometrics is the FBI-approved channeler. NABSPRO does not present itself as the channeler.

Can I use this report for U.S. employment or licensing?

The requesting organization may require a state or agency-authorized process instead. Bring its written instructions before service.

How long does the process take?

Timing can change because of fingerprint quality, identity matching, system availability, channeler workload, and delivery method. NABSPRO cannot guarantee an outside organization’s processing or delivery date.

What should I bring?

Bring valid government-issued photo ID, the written request, accurate contact and delivery information, and every required form, reference number, or deadline.

What happens if fingerprints are rejected?

The FBI or channeler determines whether a new submission or another step is required. Contact NABSPRO with the rejection notice so the available reprint process can be reviewed.
